Neural Activation in Bilinguals and Monolinguals Using a Word Identification Task

چکیده

The study investigated word recognition during neural activation in monolinguals and bilinguals. We specifically examined retrieval blood-oxygenation changes the prefrontal cortex a code-mixed task. Participants completed gating task incorporating monolingual sentences Spanish-English while using functional near-infrared spectroscopy (fNIRS) to measure changes. Word contained four phonotactic conditions: (1) voiceless initial consonants, (2) voiced (3) CV-tense words, (4) CV-lax words. Bilingual speakers had word-recognition capabilities similar even when identifying English outcomes suggested that functioning is for early age of acquisition (AOA) bilinguals words both sentences. Monolingual experienced difficulty with English-voiced consonant sounds; bilingual difficulties English-lax vowels. Results suggest localization speech perception may be populations, yet levels differed. Our findings this parity due (AoA) finding balance language (i.e., native-like proficiency) some instances processed same areas dedicated first processing.

Word Learning Under Accent Variability in Monolinguals and Bilinguals

In accent perception, individuals frequently and easily learn to map words with dissimilar acoustic characteristics onto the same word concept while simultaneously maintaining rigid word boundaries between similar-sounding utterances. Despite these learned perceptual flexibilities, individuals maintain stable linguistic precepts of an unfamiliar accent that can be transferred onto novel inciden...

Neural correlates of cognitive processing in monolinguals and bilinguals.

Here, we review the neural correlates of cognitive control associated with bilingualism. We demonstrate that lifelong practice managing two languages orchestrates global changes to both the structure and function of the brain. Compared with monolinguals, bilinguals generally show greater gray matter volume, especially in perceptual/motor regions, greater white matter integrity, and greater func...

Phonological processing differences in bilinguals and monolinguals.

The present study examined whether monolinguals and balanced bilinguals perceive speech sounds similarly or whether the two phonological systems in bilinguals interact so that one language is affected by the other. Two groups, monolingual native speakers of Finnish and balanced Finnish-Swedish bilinguals, were tested. We measured mismatch negativity (MMN) responses and used individually selecte...

Differences in word recognition between early bilinguals and monolinguals: behavioral and ERP evidence.

We investigated the behavioral and brain responses (ERPs) of bilingual word recognition to three fundamental psycholinguistic factors, frequency, morphology, and lexicality, in early bilinguals vs. monolinguals. Earlier behavioral studies have reported larger frequency effects in bilinguals' nondominant vs. dominant language and in some studies also when compared to corresponding monolinguals. ...

Stops and Phrasing in Korean and English Monolinguals and Bilinguals

The theoretical status of early bilinguals is an area of some controversy. This study investigates subphonemic variation in Korean and English by monolinguals, and bilinguals who were born in the US (simultaneous), moved to the US as young children (early), or moved to the US during late adolescence (late). Speakers were recorded producing word-initial stops in a phrase-medial context. Measurem...
